Beyond the Classroom

The Abbey connects the past, invigorates the present, and offers fulfillment beyond the classroom. From colonization and religious freedom to artistic, cultural, and scientific advancements, students have a plethora of opportunities to actively engage with history, experience marine life and industries associated with Narragansett Bay, hear from notable scholars, and pursue opportunities to embolden their future through travel and fellowships in their chosen fields.

Lecture Series at Portsmouth Abbey School: Exploring Our Intellectual Horizons

Providing a rich and engaging educational experience beyond the confines of traditional classroom settings is a critical component of our approach.

Throughout the academic year, students and faculty are treated to an array of lectures designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of the world around us. Two notable lecture series, the Kearney Lecture Series and the Dom Luke Childs Lecture Series, serve to raise the bar for our community’s commitment to academic enrichment.

The Kearney Lecture Series
Established through the vision and generosity of Father Damien Kearney, the Kearney Lecture Series embodies a dedication to exploring the culture and history of Aquidneck Island. Father Damien set the thematic direction for these lectures, often personally selecting renowned speakers to delve into various facets of local history, art, and literature. Past topics have ranged from the architectural marvels of Newport to the captivating tales of notable island figures, such as the Vanderbilts, John La Farge, and Ann Hutchinson. Despite the evolving landscape of speakers, the series remains rooted in Father Damien's original vision of enriching the school community with insights into the vibrant local heritage.
The Dom Luke Childs Lecture Series
This series was founded in honor of the late Dom Alexander Luke Childs, a monk of Portsmouth Abbey who died suddenly at the age of 36 on August 20, 1976. He taught in the History and Christian Doctrine departments, and his passion for intellectual discourse left an indelible mark on Portsmouth Abbey School. The Dom Luke Childs Lecture Series continues this legacy, serving as a source of academic enlightenment. Originating from Father Luke's practice of incorporating short lectures into the school's weekly assemblies, this series expanded under the stewardship of his family, who established a fund to support three annual lectures, featuring college and university professors speaking on their subjects. While not tethered to any religious or social agendas, these lectures explore a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from literary commentaries and classical studies to explorations of contemporary issues in politics and technology. Over the years, esteemed speakers, including professors, distinguished alumni, and industry leaders, have graced the podium, stimulating the intellectual curiosity of students and faculty alike.
