Portsmouth Abbey is proud to announce that Gabriel Devaney ’25 and Kate Verderber ’25 have been awarded a four-year Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps-Marine Option Scholarship, a recognition that places them among the most exceptional young leaders in the nation. This highly competitive scholarship covers full tuition and can be applied to any pre-approved college or university that hosts a Marine ROTC program. Though Gabe and Kate are awaiting their college acceptance letters before committing, this achievement already marks a special milestone in their journeys.

Captain Wallace, the regional ROTC coordinator, personally presented the scholarships to Gabe and Kate, underscoring the significance of their accomplishment. “This is a rare and extraordinary honor,” Captain Wallace noted. “Nationwide, only 150 candidates were awarded in this first round, and just 30 from the Northeast region. For Portsmouth Abbey to have two recipients in this cohort speaks volumes about the caliber of these students and this community.”

Both Gabe and Kate have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and as leaders during their time at Portsmouth. They have been named to the Dean’s List every year of their tenure, reflecting their dedication to classroom excellence. And their contributions extend far beyond academics: both are prefects this year, with Gabe serving in St. Hugh’s House and Kate in St. Benet’s House.

Athletically, Gabe and Kate are fixtures on the fields and courts, each captaining two varsity teams. Kate leads the Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams, while Gabe captains the Soccer and Track teams. Their dedication to sports is evidenced by the accolades they’ve earned: both were named All-EIL and All-NEPSAC for their fall sports, with Gabe also earning the title of EIL Player of the Year. Their success extends to the rigorous fitness requirements of the ROTC program, where both excelled, achieving top-tier scores in push-ups, planks, and running.

Gabe’s commitment to service and leadership is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Diane Soboski, Director of College Counseling at Portsmouth Abbey, said, “Growing up in a family where service is not just valued but expected, Gabe has internalized a deep commitment to helping others and making meaningful contributions. This drive, paired with his natural talents—both academically and athletically—positions him to excel in any endeavor he undertakes.”

Reflecting on this honor, Gabe expressed gratitude and humility. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” he said. “It’s a chance to further my education, develop as a leader, and serve a cause greater than myself. The support I’ve received from the Abbey community has been instrumental in helping me reach this milestone.

Kate’s remarkable achievements stem from her quiet determination and unwavering commitment to excellence. On Kate’s particular accomplishment, Soboski said, “Kate is the kind of student who not only leads by example but also elevates those around her. Her quiet and reflective nature initially masks just how genuinely funny, compassionate, and mature she truly is.”

Kate’s reaction to receiving the scholarship reflects her humility and her focus on the future. “I’m honored to have been selected for this scholarship,” she said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to grow as a leader and pursue my goals. I’m so thankful for my family, friends, and the Abbey for supporting me every step of the way.”

Portsmouth Abbey is proud to celebrate Gabe and Kate’s achievements and looks forward to the impact they will make as leaders in the Marine ROTC program and beyond. Their success reflects not only their individual determination but also the strength of the Portsmouth Abbey community in prioritizing leadership and service. As they prepare for the next chapter of their journeys, we are confident they will continue to embody our community’s ideals while inspiring others to strive for greatness.
