Abbey Community Continues Tradition of Supporting Local Youth Through Clothe-A-Child ProgramAmid the December busyness of exams, holiday celebrations, athletic competitions, and artistic showcases, Portsmouth Abbey students once again came together to support local youth through the School’s annual support of the Clothe-A-Child Program. This year, the Raven community raised $1,636 to purchase 260 winter coats for children and teens in need—evidence of the spirit of generosity and service that defines the School. Funds were collected through a series of student-led events, with each house contributing in its own unique way. St. Hugh’s and St. Mary’s Houses hosted a bake sale, Manor House and St. Leonard’s organized a Dress Down Day, St. Brigid’s and St. Aelred’s delighted the community with homemade crepes, and St. Martin’s and St. Benet’s spread holiday cheer with candy cane grams. Clothe-A-Child, the Abbey’s longest-standing community outreach program, was established in 1990 by longtime Infirmary staff member Pam Gorman. Though Pam is no longer a staff member, she continues to coordinate with partner organizations and personally selects coats for the children. Her dedication, alongside the tireless efforts of current infirmary staff and houseparents, ensures the program’s success year after year. The 260 coats purchased will provide comfort and warmth to local youth during the coldest months of the year. The Abbey community extends its deepest gratitude to all who participated, demonstrating once again the power of compassion and collective effort by living out our mission through service to others. Head of School Matt Walter announced that St. Hugh's and St. Mary's had earned special recognition for their efforts in supporting the program through their enthusiasm, collaboration and creativity as well as funds raised. |
