Our varsity baseball team is a member of the Eastern Independent League (EIL). EIL member schools include Bancroft School, Beaver Country Day, Berwick Academy, Concord Academy, Landmark School, Lexington Christian, and Pingree School. Non-conference opponents include Providence Country Day, Roxbury Latin, St. George's and Thayer Academy. Graduates under Coach Gittus have gone on to play baseball at Brandeis University, Elmira College, Bard College, Trinity College, Wheaton College, Salve Regina University, Washington College, Stonehill College, Merrimack College, and Curry College. The Portsmouth Abbey varsity program typically travels to Orlando, Florida for a week of practices and games during spring break. The Portsmouth Abbey Baseball program believes in providing a challenging and educational experience outside the classroom. Baseball players are expected to strive to reach their very best academically, socially, and athletically. The coaching staff believes in a smart, aggressive brand of baseball that honors the game with strong attention to fundamentals. Coach Derek Gittus began coaching at Portsmouth Abbey in 1997 when he worked with the boys’ ice hockey program. He took over as the Head Varsity Baseball Coach in 2003 and has also been the Head Coach of JV football since 2008. Coach Gittus was a 4-year letter winner in both baseball and ice hockey at Holy Cross, earning Patriot League All-Academic Team honors for baseball in 1995. Under his leadership as head coach, the Portsmouth Abbey baseball team won SENE Championship titles in 2007 and 2008 before becoming members of the EIL. The Abbey Baseball Team has won back-to-back EIL championships in 2018 and 2019, going 8-0 in the league (12-6 overall) in '18 and 7-1 in the league (13-6-1 overall) in '19. Coach Gittus is the Head of the History Department and lives on campus with his wife Allison and their three children. The Portsmouth Abbey Girls Golf team competes in the spring season against Eastern Independent League members Dana Hall and Newton Country Day, as well as Loomis Chafee, Miss Porters, Taft School and Notre Dame Academy. Each year the team participates in the Pippy O'Connor Independent School Golf Tournament and our own Parent/Daughter golf day. The team practices and plays its home matches at The Aquidneck Club, a renowned Scottish Links course that borders the School's campus. The Portsmouth Abbey Golf program believes in providing a challenging and educational experience outside the classroom. Golfers are expected to strive to reach their very best academically, socially and athletically. The Varsity Tennis program at Portsmouth Abbey School encourages students to reach their potential in the classroom as well as on the tennis court and fosters a healthy respect for coaches, officials, opponents, and the game itself. Because tennis demands both team stability and an individual commitment to hard, physical work, we train our athletes in both physical and mental aspects of the game. Practices are fast-paced and include many fitness, conditioning, and technical drills. We also encourage players to develop their overall athleticism by participating in other sports. Portsmouth Abbey School sails in the highly competitive New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA), representing the New England district of the nationwide Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). Portsmouth Abbey competes against such nationally ranked teams as St. George's School, Tabor Academy, Milton Academy and The Hotchkiss School, as well as numerous other private and public schools, including Moses Brown, Bishop Hendricken, Barnstable High School and Dartmouth High School. The sailing team at Portsmouth Abbey encourages students to reach their potential both in the classroom and on the water. Sailors are challenged to become better boat handlers, improve their tactical knowledge and learn how to sail as a member of a team. The sailing Ravens utilize the School's fleet of twelve 420s for practice on Narragansett Bay, honing skills in boat handling, starts and mark roundings as well as team-race and fleet-race specific drills. Off the water, sailors participate in discussions of rules, fleet management, tactics and team race scenarios. The Portsmouth Abbey School Sailing Team coaching staff believes that by providing highly focused, personalized attention on the water and high-intensity repetitions of fundamental skill sets sailors will improve both individually and as a team. The coaches also encourage players to take advantage of the weight room and other fitness facilities on campus to develop their overall athleticism during non-sailing days. The program fosters a healthy respect for coaches, race committees, other competitors and the sport of sailing itself. Previous sailing experience is required. Recent graduates of the Portsmouth Abbey School Sailing Team have gone on to sail collegiately at notable schools including Brown University, Connecticut College, Villanova University, Dartmouth College, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, St. Mary's College, Georgetown University, College of Charleston and UVM, among others, as well meet with success on the national and international sailing scene, including 2007 graduate Juan Maegli, the Guatemalan 2008 Olympic representative in the Laser class and winner of a Gold Medal at the 2007 Pan-American Games in Hobie-Cats. Head Coach: Jonathan Harley Coach Jonathan Harley has been heading up the Portsmouth Abbey sailing team since the spring of 2014. He began sailing with his grandfather when he was five years old and has since competed at the regional, national, and international levels. Coach Harley served as director of the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team for 25 years during which time U.S. sailors won 27 Olympic medals, including seven golds. He has been the head sailing coach at Providence College and has been the director of sailing at the Chapoquoit, Duxbury, and New Bedford Yacht Clubs. Outside of the competitive arena, Coach Harley once spent a year sailing to Tahiti and back aboard a 55’ ketch. In addition to coaching at Portsmouth Abbey he will assist the Office of Admission in recruitment efforts. The softball program at Portsmouth Abbey encourages students to reach their full potential both on and off the field. Players are challenged to improve their individual hitting, fielding, pitching and base-running in order to improve as a team and attain team goals set throughout the season. The team plays on a well-manicured field on the lower campus, and has access to indoor batting cages during inclement weather. Sportsmanship and team play is stressed in all aspects with a particular emphasis on team defense, forcing our opponents to earn every run they score. Our varsity softball team is a member of the Eastern Independent League (EIL). EIL member schools include Bancroft School, Beaver Country Day, Berwick Academy, Concord Academy, Dana Hall School, Landmark School, Lexington Christian, Newton Country Day, Pingree School and Winsor school. We also compete against traditional rivals St. George's, Tabor Academy, Marianapolis, Southfield School and Wheeler. Head Coach: Elliott Moffie Elliott grew up in Wallingford, CT and decided to teach at an independent school because of his high school experiences at Avon Old Farms. He also finds joy in working with motivated young adults both in the classroom and on the field. Elliott joined the Portsmouth Abbey faculty after graduating from Williams College in 2007, where he received a B.A. in economics. While at Williams, he started on the football team for four years at defensive back and he captained an undefeated NESCAC championship team during his senior year. At Portsmouth Abbey, Elliott has taught various levels of Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus. He currently teaches AP Calculus AB. Athletically, Elliott is the head coach of the Varsity Football Team and the head coach of the Varsity Softball Team. In 2011 and 2017, Elliott was voted EIL Softball Coach of the Year by his peer coaches. Elliott also won the Dom Peter Sidler Teaching Award for excellence in teaching in 2011. In the summer of 2012, Elliott participated in the Klingenstein Summer Institute at Columbia University. Elliot has also been a houseparent since arriving at Portsmouth Abbey for all ages of students. He currently is an assistant houseparent in St. Martin's, where he lives with his wife, Liz and son, Owen. For Track and Field, Portsmouth Abbey competes in a combined SENE/EIL association with Bancroft School, Hyde School, Marianapolis Prep, Moses Brown School and Wheeler School. We also compete against St. George's School, Worcester Academy, Roxbury Latin School, Tabor Academy, Thayer Academy, and Winsor School in dual meets. Portsmouth Abbey School has a six-lane outdoor track. Practices run about two hours each afternoon, with competition once per week. As in cross country, personal improvement is a primary goal for everyone on the team. School records are maintained for each Form and a "Top Ten" list in school history for each track and field event is also recorded. Our philosophy is simple: anyone can improve with sustained work. For the coaching staff and the program, it is just as important to us to help our new students improve their times and distances as it is for our varsity. There is a place for athletes of all ability on our teams: from individual New England Champions to students that are new to the sport. As one of the first schools to offer boys' lacrosse in Rhode Island, Portsmouth Abbey has been fielding competitive lacrosse teams for over 50 years. The varsity and JV teams provide over 55 boys the opportunity to develop their abilities at an appropriate level. He was a 4-year letter winner and 2 time All-American at CW Post College(Long Island University) and captained the team in his senior year. He has a combined 47 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels and has recorded close to 500 wins. At the collegiate level, Coach Brown was named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year and since joining the Portsmouth Abbey community nine of his Abbey teams have captured lacrosse league championships. He has earned recognition as Coach of the Year by US Lacrosse in 2010 and 2013 and the EIL in 2008, 2011 and 2022. Coach Brown was inducted into the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association(NILCA) in November, 2022. He and his wife, Linda, live in Portsmouth, RI. and Rangeley, ME., and enjoy visits from their three grown children - Jennifer, Meagan, Taylor and five grandchildren.
