Dress Code

Our dress code reflects a spirit of respect that is consistent with the Benedictine, Catholic culture at Portsmouth Abbey School. Specific dress code items change throughout the year based on the seasons, but clothing is always expected to be neat and in good repair. At the Abbey, students enjoy wearing what suits their taste while maintaining the dress code expectations during the school day. After the student’s last obligation of the day (i.e. class, athletics, church, etc), they may change into casual attire.

Laundry

Portsmouth Abbey School contracts with E&R Laundry for optional student laundry services. There are several affordable plans to choose from and each participating student receives a laundry bag, which is picked up weekly and returned with laundry neatly folded or dry-cleaned. All students are welcome to use the coin-operated commercial-sized washers and dryers conveniently located in each student house.

Student Accounts

For school-related expenses including bookstore purchases, travel, equestrian lessons, etc. every student has an incidental account tied to the tuition payment system, FACTS. An ATM is located in the student mailbox section of the Administration Building.

Bookstore

The bookstore is located in the ground level of the Science Building and is open on business days and during special events. Inventory includes apparel, school supplies, snacks, and more. Textbooks are purchased at the beginning of the year during move-in weekend.

Dining Services

Mealtimes at Portsmouth Abbey School are all about community. The Stillman Dining Hall is a cell phone-free zone, where hats are removed, to encourage students to communicate with each other and connect amid the busy day. A formal, sit-down dinner is offered twice per term during the school year. In keeping with tradition, these special dinners are served family style to further connect with peers and practice proper dining etiquette.

The menu features a wide variety of fresh foods for everyone’s appetite including fresh fruit, yogurt and made-to-order omelets for breakfast; delicious hot entrees, paninis and a salad bar for lunch and dinner; house-made soups, freshly baked deserts, fresh milk from local farms free of artificial growth hormones, and much more. Sunday brunch after church is a favorite among students and faculty alike. Beverages include juice, milk, iced tea, coffee and select electrolyte drinks to fuel up before or after a game. There are always options for gluten-free and/or lactose-free students at each meal.

Birthdays are a big deal around here. As such, birthday cakes are available for order through dining services and delivered straight to the student.

Mail

Every student is given a box in the mailroom for letters and packages. A list of items permitted in the student houses and on campus is included in the Parent Portal
