From Reading to Reels, Three New(ish) Clubs for Students

Just a few weeks ago, Portsmouth Abbey School hosted its annual Clubs Fair, where students can learn more about each of our 29 student-run organizations. Student clubs at the Abbey have always been a great way to try new things and meet new people while managing academic and athletic schedules. A rich lineup of clubs every year appeals to various opportunities and interests. Here, we highlight a few of our new(ish) clubs on campus, as described in their own words.

Book Club

Book Club was started to encourage the enjoyment of reading outside of school. It’s open to anyone to join. It was imagined as a space where people would have the motivation to read and discuss various books, with the goal of helping reading become a habit for everyone, especially because everyone can always read more. The Book Club’s first read is “Hallowe’en Party” by Agatha Christie.

Film Club

Portsmouth Abbey’s Film Club is an institute for passionate filmmakers and film buffs alike. Everyone, regardless of skill or prior knowledge, is invited to join! We watch movies, we make movies. We needed a club for inspiring filmmakers on the level of other high schools with future filmmakers, writers, and producers! For our first film, we will create a thrilling sci-fi horror short. We are choosing this double-genre theme for our first movie because we in the film club are horror aficionados.

Fishing Club

Our location on the shore of Narragansett Bay, with its rocky beaches and estuaries, offers many opportunities to explore ecosystems or find solace in nature. When we contacted the Fishing Club to learn more about their goals and activities, we received a two-word response: “Gone fishin’.”
