Ravens RoundUp: March 2025
Multiple Championships, Squash Coach Featured in "New York Magazine"
Head of School Matt Walter raises the Holt Conference trophy following a historic win from the boys varsity hockey team. Congratulations to the Raven boys varsity squash and boys and girls varsity ice hockey teams, who joined the Raven wrestlers in achieving league championships during the winter sports season.
SquashThe top seed in the Class E tournament, the Ravens were ready for their championship match, defeating the number two seed, Williston Northampton School, 5-2. Bohan Li ’25 battled his Wildcat opponent after a forced fifth match. Three of the five games the two played were two-point games.
Girls Varsity Ice HockeyBy working together as a team, girls varsity ice hockey ensured that the final moments of their EIL championship game ended with a 3-2 win over Pingree School, shouts of joy, and a three-peat championship for the Ravens. Down by one, the Ravens eventually took the lead and held off further advancement from the Highlanders to secure their victory. “We talked about legacy a lot this year,” said Head Coach Kurt Carter. “To have won the EIL Championship three years in a row is huge, especially for girls graduating. They worked hard and won three in a row; no one can ever take that away from them.”
Boys Varsity Ice HockeyFor the first time in school history, the boys varsity hockey team won the Holt Conference championship. They defeated North Yarmouth Academy 8-5 to bring home the trophy that has eluded them despite previous strong seasons. With seven talented teams in league play, the Ravens held their own throughout the season. Pingree and North Yarmouth have previously given Portsmouth a run for their money, but this season, the second for head coach Zach Cappelli, the Ravens added a few newcomers to complement their more seasoned players. All Conference Selections for 24-25 were announced on March 7. Forwards Noah Jimbo (23G, 22A - 45pts) and Hunter McCarthy (16G, 23A - 39pts) and defensive player Luca Mestrandrea (2G, 23A - 25pts) were selected to represent Portsmouth Abbey School.
Varsity Boys Basketball Earns NEPSAC Quarter-Final PlayThe varsity boys basketball team was looking to rebuild this season after losing some key players to the college circuit last year. They did just that. After a somewhat slow start to the season, they began to play stronger together, winning multiple games in a row and narrowing the spread when defeated. The excitement was infectious when they took down number-one-ranked Lexington Christian Academy in an incredible 48-46 performance. Their success earned them a bid to the NEPSAC Tournament, where they ultimately fell to second-seed Hamden Hall Country Day in the quarter-final round. The future is bright for this team, with some talented players rising to the varsity level next year.
