Ravens Roundup

Fall Term 2024

Thrilling Fall Sports Season Ends with Three Teams Named to NEPSAC

Minimal rain and warm temperatures helped make the fall sports season one for the record books. The naming of the varsity volleyball and the girls' and boys' varsity soccer teams to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournaments was even more memorable.

While the volleyball team has competed in the NEPSAC tournament two times in the past several years, the girls' soccer team has not competed since 2008, and the boys' team has not competed since 2016.

“While I am immensely proud of all Portsmouth Abbey School student-athletes for how hard they work and stay true to the idea of sportsmanship, I am excited about these fall teams,” said Director of Athletics Chris Milmoe. “To have experienced the highest levels of competition in the post-season and given it their all is something to be celebrated. I hope these teams know and appreciate how much they have inspired our community and the student-athletes who will compete in the upcoming seasons and next year.”

The brackets for all three tournaments were highly competitive, with well-known athletic programs represented. In volleyball, Mount St. Charles bested the Ravens in the quarterfinals. The Canterbury Saints then defeated the Mounties in the finals. On the girls' varsity soccer pitch, the Ravens fell to the Pomfret Griffins, who claimed the championship for the second year. The boys lost to the Vermont Academy Wildcats in the championships for their division.

Boys Varsity Soccer Wins EIL Conference and Tournament Championships

In a moment, eight years in the making, the Portsmouth Abbey Boys Varsity Soccer Team won the Eastern Independent League (EIL) Championship with an undefeated EIL record of 8-0-2. Ranked third in New England during the regular season, the Ravens outscored their league opponents 33-6 after securing the league championship. They entered the EIL Tournament, determined and ready for action, defeating the Wheeler School and Concord Academy to claim their second EIL title this year.

At the start of the 2024 season, the team set their sights on winning the league and qualifying for the New England Tournament. “I'm incredibly proud of this team's unwavering dedication and hard work. Their effort and commitment to one another have made us undefeated EIL champions and EIL tournament champions, showing what true teamwork and resilience can achieve,” said Sebastian Gonzalez, head coach of the program. “Not only did we achieve our goal of winning the league championship, but we also exceeded it as finalists in the New England tournament. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our program.”
