Ravens ROundup: October 2024Varsity Field Hockey The field hockey team has put up a .571 winning percentage over 14 games this season, going 6-3 across all home contests. When it comes to away matches, the girls have a 2-3 record, showing how tough league play is this season. In their last 6 games, the squad went 5-1, an impressive streak heading toward the end of the season. JV Field Hockey The JV field hockey crew has launched a slow but spirited start to the year. While steadfastly fighting for their first win of the year, the girls are showing signs of individual and squad improvement. Recently, in a touch away match against St. George’s, the girls logged their first goal of the year, a bright spot in an otherwise tough contest. The girls took another tough loss defending St. Hilda's turf field on October 16th against Dexter Southfield with a 0-3 scoreline. Girls Varsity Soccer Girls varsity soccer has a 6-6-1 record for the year. Promising early wins against Concord (2-1) and Winchendon School (9-0) were followed by tough performances at Newton Country Day (1-4), Lexington Christian (4-4), and Mount Saint Charles Academy (1-5). A brief recovery of form, a 2-1 win over Beaver Country Day, preceded two home losses, St. George’s (0-4) and Dana Hall School (1-2). With plenty of time left on the schedule, Ravens soccer is looking to secure a run of good form toward the end of the season, building off of two recent wins against Mount Saint Charles Academy (6-1) and Beaver Country Day (3-0). Girls JV Soccer The girls JV soccer team sits at 5-6 on the season. A few tough, close losses disguises how good this team is and will continue to be through the rest of the season. Standout matches include a 4-0 win over Cushing and a 5-2 victory over Dana Hall School. The last two matches have resulted in wins for the squad, a 5-3 win over Beaver Country Day and a 2-0 shutout against Wheeler. Varsity Volleyball The volleyball team has gone 5-10 in all contests so far this season. Highlight performances include a 3-1 win over Concord Academy, a 3-0 win over Wheeler School, both at home, with a hard-earned away win against Beaver Country Day (3-2) on October 19th. JV Volleyball The JV volleyball squad holds a 1-2-1 record so far on the year. Their single win of the year came in a 2-1 away match against Pingree School. This performance was followed closely by a tie match at home against Wheeler. The team is working toward a strong finish to the year. Boys Varsity Soccer Boys Ravens soccer enjoys an 8-2-2 record on the season. Putting up 30 goals over across all competitions, the boys squad continues to display exceptional skill, though not always reflected in the final score. The team’s struggles are few and far between, but they tend to manifest during away games, as the boys have logged only one away win, a 2-1 evening win against Beaver Country Day. The team's two most recent home wins stand out, both shut outs, one against Dexter Southfield (2-0), the other against the Beaver Country Day (4-0). Boys Junior Varsity Soccer After two close losses to start the year (vs. Cushing and Concord), the boys JV-A squad has won seven in a row, including two away wins. Standout performances include a 9-0 win over Rocky Hill Country Day and an 8-1 home victory over Lexington Christian. The JV-B squad has seen mixed results in competitions so far this season. They took on a 2-7 loss against Concord and tied 2-2 in a match against Pingree. Varsity Cross Country The boys and girls cross country teams have had an excellent start to the season with some quality wins, tremendous performances, and extensive improvement since the first day of preseason. Team leaders include Tilly Holling '26 and Brooke Marston ’27 who have finished in the top five in every one of their races. Holling carries a season-best time of 21:27 while Marston recently ran a 21:12. Joey Levreault ’26 has been the most consistent runner for the boys, also finishing in the top five for each of his races while even claiming his first outright victory during the Parents Weekend home meet. He recently notched his all-time best time of 18:18 on his path to run a 5K in under 18 minutes. While the boys have an excellent pack of runners following Levreault, the highlight of the season has been a particular group of third form runners. Avery Howell leads this group of newcomers with a best time of 19:22, but Patrick Welch, Max Maskara, Jimmy Noonan, and Adelino Vellis are right behind him, with every one of those boys having run under 21 minutes this season. The middle pack of the girls is also gaining steam, as a group of five (Eva Madden ’26, Daisy Jin ’27, Julia Poore ’27, Lucy Wang ’26, and Isabelle Munger ’27) all ran season best times on October 9, and they all broke 26 minutes. The boys have defeated all opponents except for two teams (Landmark and Wheeler), and so they will be in contention for a top three finish at the league championship meet. The girls have had some quality wins but face a steeper hill due especially to the incredibly strong teams from all-girls schools in the EIL. But if all goes well, they will be able to chase down a spot in the top five of the league. Boys Varsity Golf The Boys Golf team has walked away with several key wins this season, enjoying an overall 4-4 record. At one point, the team went four and one over a four-week stretch, an impressive feat, no doubt, marked by key wins at home against Wheeler School, Landmark, and Lexington Christian. These impressive wins capped off with an away victory at Bancroft. The team is on a well-performing streak, with only one contest dropped at Beaver Country Day. Their most recent victory was a home win against Berwick Academy on Octover 19th. Varsity Football Despite strong efforts and noticeable improvement in individual performances, the varsity football squad is still working toward team cohesion. Even with many notable performances, the team dropped four games over the last month, two home losses (Proctor Academy and Austin Prep) and two away losses (Berkshire School and Pingree School). |
