The Monks

Portsmouth Abbey is home to a distinguished community of Benedictine monks governed by the Rule of St. Benedict. Established in 1918 by Dom Leonard Sargent, an esteemed American monk hailing from Downside Abbey in England, the monastery serves as both a sanctuary and wellspring of inspiration for Portsmouth Abbey School.

Amidst their scholarly pursuits, the monks actively immerse themselves in campus life, participating in school activities from sunrise to sunset. Whether sharing breakfast in the dining hall, cheering for student-athletes, supporting student artists and musicians, or feeding the parrots, their presence ignites our school with intellectual vitality, uplifting humor, and the profound example of their dedicated lives.

Their invaluable teachings remind us that we are not here merely to accumulate knowledge and accolades. We are embracing a profound quest for spiritual and intellectual fulfillment. Through their exemplary lives, the monks illuminate the profound truth that while perfection may elude us, pursuing excellence holds immeasurable value and spiritual significance.
